As a web design and development company, we are always interested in small details. Speed optimization of your site is crucial to your conversion rate and a small detail such as the location of your servers will make a difference to your customers and the time it takes for your website to load. This does not take into consideration the configuration of the server itself but purely it’s location.

Please see below the following websites as an example.

  1. Australian advertising agency - Hosted in US (Inmotion Hosting)
  2. Freelancer Site hosted in Europe
  3. Our Site Webz hosted in Sydney.

Provider: Inmotion Hosting
Hops: 14
Location: US
Total time to reach the site: 0.218s

Provider: Mintshost
 Hops: 19
Location: Europe/Poland
Total time to reach the site: 0.329s

Provider: Binary Lane
Hops: 8
Location: Australia / Sydney
Total time to reach the site: 0.013s

As we can see, distance does matter. Based on the location there is a difference of between 0.2s -0.3s between each page request. By using an Australian based server If you have more than a 1000 page views a day - this could result in you saving up to 5 minutes of loading time. Within a month you could save more than 2.5hrs of loading time compared to using the example overseas server. Mobile users are very impatient and they will leave the site if it's loading slowly or they will abandon the cart and go to your competition. The rule of thumb is, the closer the server is, the better - especially in Australia where we have a limited internet speed and we are connected to the rest of the world with just “one line”.
